"... and you will not know / where to stop." Lovely, how the pearly beach and its remnants call us.

We sit at the end of the Sound

Noticing how the unrelenting waves

Push back against the wooden pier.

The salt wind rustling the pines

Recalls to us the songs shells

jingled in our ears, reminding us

of the beauty of the pearly sand

we’ll later run our hands through.

The beach stretches endlessly

Toward a future we cannot know.

At The End

08/11/25

At the end really was one end

We thought was ours

Bogged with silences

Eyes cast into corners

In rooms which barely could

Suffer our presence together-

The music faded

We danced no more

Just turned and walked away

Too tired of each other

Even to look back

Relieved the end had come-

Now all these years later

You tell me you are fading

At the end

Not one not ours but the

End

I feel extinction everywhere-

Tonight I hear the last sigh

Of a star of a species

Of a part of me

Held in a pocket

Of forgotten hopes

Like magma biding-

Under the cool green cap

Of a tranquil sea

The whale song goes unanswered

Yet somehow we find

Our way to sit together

And see each other

At the end-

Such a gritty poem, Peter...it puts a lump in my heart and a tug at my throat but glad you could see each other at the end.

Thank you so much. The prompt made this fly out of me in 20 minutes. My ex and I did have a visit recently. I traveled to see him. He’s still alive but, tik tok, tik tok. We finally acknowledged how much we loved each other but that we weren’t meant to stay together. It was bittersweet.
