✨ Portrait of a Reader: Sandra Heska King
Coffee. Everglades. Wacky cake. Meet a fellow Every Day Poems reader!
As part of our upcoming 12th birthday celebration, we asked readers to share about themselves and their experiences with Every Day Poems.
Sandra Heska King has joined in and shared some inspiring things we hope you’ll enjoy!
About Sandra
Reader Sandra Heska King has been with our Every Day Poems community for 12 years. She is a retired nurse who now tries to care via the written word. Sandra enjoys hiking and amateur photography—seeking out bits of beauty and getting as close to critters (even crocodiles!) as she dares. Sandra recently bought a handpan for her birthday and has started to take online lessons.
Geography
Says Sandra, “I hug the edge of the northern Everglades in West Boca Raton. When the night quivers with what I call the ‘Ballad of the Bufo’ (the mating call of the poison cane toad), I know spring is in the air.”
Every Day Poems Reading Ritual?

Tea or Coffee?
Always coffee first thing in the morning. Straight up.
Cake
“Chocolate, of course. With chocolate frosting,” says Sandra. “I don't make it often, but when I do, it’s what my grandmother called ‘Wacky Cake’ and what Peg Bracken in The I Hate to Cook Book called ‘Cockeyed Cake.’ It was a Depression recipe, I think. No eggs. Perfect for days like this when you could fly to Tahiti for the cost of a dozen eggs.”
Birthday Greeting to Every Day Poems
“Time flies! I can't believe 12 years have gone by already. You’re still as beautiful as ever.”
Quote from Every Day Poems to Send to Herself on Her Own Birthday
“What can anyone give you greater than now, starting here, right in this room, when you turn around?”
—William Stafford in “You Reading This, Be Ready”
.
Thank you, Sandra, for sharing with the community! :)

Aww, this is great! Thanks for sharing that Stafford quote, Sandra. I'm fascinated by the no-egg cake, not to mention the handpan. Also, respect for that first cup of black coffee. ;)
Totally love your birthday quote to yourself, Sandra. And, of course, chocolate cake!! :)
