Sadly, I can testify to the truth of this line: often in the past when I was hurt emotionally, I would curl inside myself (for protection from further injury - ?) which just proved to isolate me from others. I am learning to reach out for support and encouragement.

I relate to that too, and especially appreciate that the poet touched on sense of sound. "Yet near me there sounds no noise of horse or coach." I feel like it's an accurate-to-me way of expressing how all the activity around a griever, or someone in pain/shock, feels far away and muffled, if not silent.
